Winter Project

I have a bit of a winter project on the go
I am stripping down and refurbishing a treadle sewing machine.
 It is very grimy,
 badly stained with nicotine
 The belt is perished
All the parts need a good clean down
There isnt much in the way of workings to these machines
The table needs a to be restored as well

There metal plates have so much detail on them
So the plan is clean it all down and oil it, then the table will be cleaned up, I have found some great you tube videos on restoring vintage machines, it is still possible to get parts.
I have ordered a new belt and some needles.
Cleaning involves lots of elbow grease, sewing machine oil, WD40 and metal polish.
This one of the videos I am watching and following

I would be interested to know if anyone has tried this.

  1. For years I had one, and regularly I would service mine, there is very little to go wrong. Good luck. Great project

  2. What a great project. I am keeping an eye out for a hand crank or treadle machine too. I think about what would happen if the power went out for good. At least I could knit on my knitting machines and sew if I had a manual sewing machine, during daylight hours anyway. Hope you keep posting pictures of the progress.

  3. What a great project! It will be interesting to see it as you work through all that needs to be done. Well worthwhile I am sure.

  4. Can't wait to see if finished. My dad made the stand for a table with the treddle part he acquired from somewhere. It was very soothing just sitting at the table pressing on the plate.

  5. I love your vintage sewing machine. Good luck with the restoration. If you are on Facebook, there is a USA based Facebook group called Vintage Sewing Machines. There are many discussions about a variety of machines and tips for dating machines, restoration and a person who sells parts for many machines. I have a few machines, however my husband likes to work on them.

  7. Hi Dawn, I have cleaned up very grimy machines. I have one waiting in the wings to completely strip, repaint and add brand new decals. Project for this coming summer when I can work in the garage. Would love to see the finished machine if you are finished.
Hugs for now from snowy New Hampshire (brrr)
